CSU WOMEN'S GOLF NOTES

  • The Cleveland State women's golf team travels to Florida to compete in the Horizon League Championship from Sunday through Tuesday (April 22-24) at Mission Inn Resort.
  • The Vikings will be joined at the League Championship by Oakland, IUPUI, Northern Kentucky, UIC, Youngstown State, Green Bay and Detroit Mercy.
  • The event will once again be played at the par-72, 6,031-yard Las Colinas at Mission Inn Resort.
  • CSU is the defending champion, winning the first League title in program history last year.
  • Last year, the Vikings opened the tournament with a round of 319 and was in fourth place, but used a tournament-low round of 302 in round two to vault into first place heading into the final round.
  • Four teams - CSU, Northern Kentucky, Youngstown State and Oakland - were within four shots of the lead heading into the final 18 holes and traded the top spot of the leaderboard throughout the day. But in the end, the Vikings final round of 307 helped CSU top YSU by three shots. Northern Kentucky was third at 935, while Oakland was fourth at 938.
  • CSU's 315.1 scoring average this year is currently the best for a season in school history. Last year's team holds the record with a 317.2 average.
  • The Vikings carded an opening round 292 at the Ball State Invitational (Sept. 18), the lowest round in program history. CSU followed it with a second round 299, the third lowest round in school history.
  • The Vikings have three top-three finishes this year, including a pair of runner up finishes.
  • The winner of the League championship will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA Regional Championships, while will be contested from May 5-7 in Stanford, Calif. (Stanford GC), Austin, Texas (UT Golf Club), Madison, Wis. (University Ridge GC), and Tallahassee, Fla. (Southwood GC).

MADISON BUTLER | FRESHMAN | MEDINA, OHIO
One of the top freshman in the Horizon League with a 78.9 scoring average, ninth best in League... her average is currently the second lowest for a freshman in program history... has played in 19 of the 20 rounds this year... opened collegiate career with rounds of 72-77 (149) to win the Roseann Schwartz Invitational (Sept. 4-5)... tied for 24th at Shirley Spork Invitational (Oct. 9-10) with rounds of 78-79-83 (240)... fired a final round 75 at Grand Canyon Invitational (Feb. 25)... tied for 18th at Babs Steffens Hatter Collegiate with rounds of 78-80-78 (236)... was a first team all-conference selection all four years in high school and a First Team All-Ohio honoree as a senior.

SOPHIE KELNER | SENIOR | CARMEL, IND.
Has an 81.7 average this year, playing in all 20 rounds... rankes 23rd in League in scoring... leads team with two rounds of par or better this year... tied for 12th at Ball State Invitational (Sept. 18-19) with rounds of 72-72-77 (221)... the 221 is lowest 54 hole total by a CSU player this year... shot second round 75 at Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 23)... carded a second round 76 at Grand Canyon Invitational (Feb. 24)... was a second team All-Horizon League selection as a junior... holds CSU record for lowest round with a 68 in first round of Butler Invitational (10/6/14)... career scoring average of 80.8 is fourth in program history.

ASHLEY KNIGHT | FRESHMAN | SYLVANIA, OHIO
Has recorded an 80.4 average this year, playing in 19 rounds... is 13th in League in scoring... won the JCU Invitational (Sept. 17-18) playing, shooting 73-80 (153) as an individual... shot a second round 76 at the Shirley Spork Invitational (Oct. 9-10) en route to a tie for 31st... tied for 43rd at Grand Canyon Invitaitonal as an individual with rounds of 79-79-76 (234)... fired a 77 at the Sand Ridge Shootout to tie for eighth place... was a four-time all-league selection and state qualifier in high school... set school record for lowest nine hole (32) and 18 hole (68) scores.

KAYLEE NEUMEISTER | SOPHOMORE | CORTLAND, OHIO
Leads team and ranks fifth in Horizon League with a 78.6 scoring average... has competed in all 20 rounds this year... fired low round of season for CSU and tied for low round by a League player with a 70 in first round of Ball State Invitational (Sept. 18)... tied for sixth at season opening Roseann Schwartz Invitational (Sept. 4-5) with back-to-back rounds of 76... teams top finisher at Mary Fossum Invitational (Sept. 23-24), shooting 77-75-78 (230) to tie for 18th place... opened Shirley Spork Invitational (Oct. 9) with a 73... tied for 19th at Dolores Black Falcon Invitational (April 7-8) with rounds of 78-76 (154)... carded a 76 at Sand Ridge Shootout (April 13) to tie for fifth place... was a first team All-Horizon League selection as a freshman... finished sixth at the Horizon League Championship as a freshman, carding rounds of 76-77-78... was named a 2016-17 WGCA All-American Scholar... career scoring average of 78.3 is tops in school history.

EMILY TURSKI | SENIOR | TOLEDO, OHIO
Has posted an 80.8 scoring average this year, ranking 16th in the League... has lowered her season scoring average every year, going from 91.2 as a freshman to 86.6 as a sophomore and 82.7 last year... has played in all 20 rounds this year... fired career-low round of 71 in second round of Ball State Invitational (Sept. 18), the second lowest round on the squad this year... season-low 54 hole total of 230 (77-71-82) to tie for 49th at Ball State Invitational... shot a final round 74 to conclude play at Grand Canyon Invitaitonal (Feb. 25)... tied for 10th at Dolores Black Falcon Invitational (April 7-8) with back-to-back rounds of 76... carded a 76 at Sand Ridge Shootout (April 13) to tie for fifth place... tied for 20th at last year's League Championship, firing 75-77 in first two rounds... the opening round 75 was a then career-low... was named a 2016-17 WGCA All-American Scholar.
