Vikings Return to Action With Two Events Next Week

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's golf team returns to action for its second and third tournaments of the fall next week, starting with the Cardinal Classic on Monday and Tuesday (Sept. 18-19) and continuing with the Mary Fossum Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (Sept. 23-24).

The Cardinal Classic will take place at the par-72, 6,204 yard The Players Club in Yorktown, Ind., with teams playing 36 holes on Monday beginning at 8:30 am and the final 18 holes on Tuesday at 9:00 am.

In addition to CSU and host Ball State, the field includes Akron, Austin Peay, Bowling Green, Bradley, Central Michigan, Dayton, Drake, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Indiana State, Indianapolis, Northern Illinios, Northern Kentucky, Southern Illinois, Toledo, Western Illinois and Western Michigan.

The Mary Fossum Invitational - hosted by Michigan State - will be played at the par-72, 6,334 yard Forest Akers West GC with 36 holes on Saturday and the final 18 holes on Sunday.

The Vikings opened the fall season by placing third of 10 teams at the Roseann Schwartz Invitational, carding rounds of 313 and 309 at Mill Creek GC.

Freshman Madison Butler claimed medalist honors in her first collegiate tournament, firing an even-par 72 to take the first round lead and following it with a final round 77 for a 36 hole total of 149, finishing two shots ahead of four golfers. Butler became the first Viking to claim medalist honors at an event since Kaylee Neumeister was co-medalist at a tri-meet with Oakland and Youngstown State in February. It marked the ninth time a CSU player has been medalist at a tournament and Butler becomes the fifth player in program history to win a tournament.

Neumeister also had a strong showing at this year's first event, tying for sixth place with back-to-back round of 76, while freshman Amanda Baker tied for 20th place with rounds of 84-76 (154). Her second round 76 was tied for the fourth lowest final round.

Following these two events, the Vikings close out the fall slate at the Shirley Spork Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. on Oct. 9-10.
