Vikings to Compete in Horizon League Championship This Weekend

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State women's golf team will compete in the Horizon League Championship from Friday through Sunday (April 24-26) at the Mission Inn Resort in Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.

The Vikings finished fifth at last year's league championship. CSU's best finish at the league championship was a runner-up showing in 2009.

Detroit won last year's championship with a 54-hole total of 943, seven shots better than runner-up Oakland. Youngstown State was third at 955 and with Valparaiso (957), CSU (960), UIC (985) and Green Bay (989) rounding out the field.

Junior Allyson Hackman shot three consecutive rounds of 78 and finished tied for fourth at last year's league championship, earning a spot on the all-tournament team. She was also sixth at the 2013 league championship to garner a spot on the all-tournament team.

Hackman has once again led the Vikings this year, posting a 77.3 scoring average, which would be the lowest for a season in school history. Katie Broere currently holds the school record with a 78.5 average in 2008-09. Hackman has posted five top-five finishes this year in CSU's nine events, including a medalist honor at the Benbow Invitational in early March.

Hackman's career scoring average of 79.0 is tops in school history, more than two shots better than Ariel Sparrow (2009-13) who is second at 81.1.

Freshman Sophie Kelner is a candidate for Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, ranking second on the team with an 80.5 scoring average, tied for seventh best in a season in school history. Kelner, who lost in a playoff to Hackman at the Benbow Invitational, became the first player in program history to break 70 when she fired a 68 at the Butler Invitational in October.

She has five top-20 showings this season.

Senior Colleen Miller is averaging 84.1 this season, including a pair of top-20 finishes. In the fall opener at Youngstown State, Miller carded rounds of 77-72 (149) for a runner-up finish. She has posted an 84.5 scoring average during her career.

Freshman Hannah Bennie (84.6) and junior Madison Lomas (85.2) will round out CSU's lineup at the league championship.

Bennie, who carded a career-low 78 in her first career collegiate round, has a top-20 finish this year, while Lomas has a top-five finish this year, tying for fifth place at the Youngstown State Invitational in the fall when she carded a final round 75, her lowest round of the season.

The winner of the league championship will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Women's Golf Championship. The selections will be announced live on Monday (April 27) at 7:00 p.m. on the Golf Channel.

The NCAA Regionals will be played from May 7-9 with the four sites being in Raleigh, N.C., South Bend, Ind., San Antonio, Texas and St. George, Utah.

The Division I Championships are scheduled from May 22-27 at Concession Golf Club in Bradenton, Fla.
