CHICAGO, Ill. - Cleveland State shot an opening round 316, tied for the third lowest round in school history, and is in third place of 15 teams after the first round of the Chicago State Cougar Classic that opened on Monday.

The event is being played at the par-72, 5,904-yard Harborside International Golf Center.

The only other better rounds in program history were a 314 at the Bucknell Lady Bison Invitational on Sept. 11, 2011, and a 315 at the Marshall Invitational on Oct. 9, 2008. The Vikings also shot a 316 on Sept. 22, 2008, at the Ball State Invitational.

"I'm proud of the way that the girls played today, but it could have been a few shots better," head coach Steve Weir said. "We had a few too many three putts, but hopefully we can get that straightened out moving forward. It will be great for us to play in the final group on Tuesday and get some experience with so many teams bunched so tightly near the top."

IUPUI leads the event after 18 holes at 309, while Indiana State is in second place at 315. The Vikings are one shot back in third place and are followed by Chicago State (318), Northern Illinois (320), Loyola and Valparaiso (321), Eastern Illinois (324), North Dakota, IPFW, Texas Pan-American and SIU-Edwardsville (325), UIC (335), Lewis (335) and Green Bay (336).

The Vikings used consistent play from its top four finishers today as CSU had two players shoot 78 and two card 80's.

Ariel Sparrow and Micaela Cronin each shot 78 and are tied for 17th place, while Allyson Hackman and Shelly Ford both shot 80 and are tied for 24th place.

The final round is slated for Tuesday with a 9:15 a.m. shotgun start.
