Bernard Scott will be entering his sixth season as a member of the Cleveland State coaching staff during the 2015-16 academic year, serving as the associate head coach. Scott, a 15-year collegiate coaching veteran, transitioned to associate head coach prior to the 2013-14 season, and also serves as CSU’s recruiting coordinator.

Scott is involved in all facets of the program, including on-floor coaching, individual workouts, recruiting and opponent scouting. He also works daily with the development of CSU’s post players. Under his guidance the Viking post players have recorded 81 double-doubles over the past four seasons and two triple-doubles. Over the past four years, Scott has been instrumental in the development of Imani Gordon, who became the eighth Viking in program history to earn All-Horizon League honors twice in her career.

During the 2014-15 season, Scott helped guide the Vikings to a 19-13 overall record – Cleveland State’s first winning season over the past four years. Scott was also an integral part of helping Cleveland State earn an automatic bid to the 2015 WNIT, after finishing the regular season ranked third in the Horizon League.

During the 2012-13 season Scott helped Shalonda Winton earn Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the all-league first team, while etching her name in 14 categories in the CSU career record book.

In his first year at CSU (2010-11) he helped the Vikings to a 21-12 record, with the 21 wins marking the second most wins in school history and only the second time CSU has ever won more than 20 games in a season. CSU also finished with a 12-6 Horizon League record, which tied the 2008-09 team for most league wins in a season. The Vikings then tied for second place in the regular season standings, marking the best finish in program history. During the 2010-11 season the Vikings advanced to the postseason for the third time in a four-year span, earning the top seed in the West Region of the Women’s Basketball Invitational.

Scott arrived in Cleveland after spending two seasons at Youngstown State University, and has also served as an assistant coach at the University of Arizona, University of Dayton and the University of Toledo.

Scott was the lead assistant and recruiting coordinator for the Penguins, where he worked daily with the development of the YSU guards. His duties also included on-floor coaching, individual workouts, conditioning and opponent scouting. During his tenure at YSU, Scott recruited and signed Brandi Brown, the runner-up for 2010 Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, as well as Bojana Dimitrov who was a top-100 junior college player.

At Arizona, Scott was responsible for post player development, practice preparation, on-floor coaching and assisting with recruiting. Under his guidance, the Wildcat post players recorded 19 double-doubles in 2007-08, which was an improvement from four the previous year. He also helped recruit the 52nd-ranked class in the nation, according to the All Star Girls Report.

Prior to joining the staff at Arizona, Scott spent two seasons as an assistant coach at Dayton, helping lead the Flyers to a 17-12 record in 2005-06, the first winning season in five years. While at Dayton, he helped secure the 29th-ranked recruiting class, according to the Blue Star Recruiting Service, which included a two-time Ohio Player of the Year and a top-five player from Canada.

Scott began his coaching career at Toledo where he served for four years, beginning in 2001. During his four years, he assisted with recruiting, player development, scouting, camps and academics. He was part of the coaching staff that led the Rockets to the 2003 regular season MAC title and a berth in the WNIT.

Throughout his 14-year coaching career, eight players have earned all-league honors and three have been named all-league freshmen under his guidance.

A native of Cleveland, Scott earned a degree in Physical Education and Recreation from Toledo in 2001. He also received a master’s degree in Recreation and Leisure Studies from Toledo.

Scott and his wife, Colleen, have two daughters, Lily (8) and Chloe (3).
