Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Returns Home To Pick Up 79-37 Victory Over YSU

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State women's basketball team returned home for the first time in nearly four weeks on Saturday, picking up a 79-37 victory over Youngstown State. With the win, the Vikings are now 13-3 on the year and 4-1 in Horizon League play.

Game Stats
-Three Vikings finished the game in double-figure points, with Colbi Maples and Sara Guerreiro both notching 17 points and Jordana Reisma adding 14.
-Sara Guerreiro grabbed a team-best 11 rebounds, while Jordana Reisma recorded eight boards.
-As a team, Cleveland State combined for 16 steals on the game, including five from Carmen Villalobos and four from Colbi Maples.
-The Vikings forced YSU into 25 turnovers, turning these miscues into 26 points.

The Game
Cleveland State was able to get out to a quick 8-0 lead in the contest, before gaining a double-digit lead at 12-1 following a Colbi Maples layup at the 2:40 mark. The Vikings were then able to hold YSU to just four points on the quarter, with a Grace Ellis three-pointer over the final seconds of the frame putting Cleveland State up 21-4 after the first 10 minutes of action.

Despite YSU opening the second quarter with a 7-0 run, the Vikings responded with an 11-2 run of their own, gaining a 33-13 lead following a Maples layup at the 4:11 mark. During this stretch, the Vikings got seven points from Sara Guerreiro and five points from Maples.

The Vikings were able to hold their sizable lead over the final four minutes of the frame then, taking a 39-19 advantage into the halftime break.

During the first half of play, the Cleveland State defense was able to hold the Penguins to 21-percent shooting from the floor, while recording eight steals and forcing YSU into 11 turnovers.

Cleveland State carried its momentum into the third quarter, as an 8-3 scoring run to open the frame extended the Vikings' lead to 47-22 following a Guerreiro layup at the 6:26 mark, before a Shadiya Thomas layup 2:28 later gave the Vikings a 30-point lead at 53-23.

The Vikings then controlled play throughout the final part of the third quarter, closing out the frame on a 9-2 run to take a 62-25 lead into the final 10 minutes of action.

Cleveland State continued its momentum during the final quarter, coming away with the 79-37 victory.
