Cleveland State Women’s Basketball Earns 63-56 Victory At Milwaukee In Regular Season Finale

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Cleveland State women's basketball team closed out regular season play Saturday, picking up a 63-56 victory at Milwaukee to finished regular season action 27-4 overall and 17-3 in Horizon League play.

GAME STATS
-Four Vikings finished in double-figures on the day, led by Destiny Leo with 16 points, Gabriella Smith with 15, Brittni Moore with 11 and Amele Ngwafang with 10.
-Gabriella Smith and Amele Ngwafang both grabbed nine rebounds on the day, while Brittni Moore added eight.
-Cleveland State combined for 10 steals, including four from Gabriella Smith.
-The Vikings forced Milwaukee into 20 turnovers, turning these miscues into 23 points.
-Cleveland State out-rebounded the Panthers 41-35 on the game.

GAME NOTES
-With 15 points against Milwaukee, Gabriella Smith recorded her eighth double-digit scoring game of the season.
-Cleveland State's 10 steals on the day marked the 12th time this season that the Vikings have posted double-digit steals.
-Saturday's victory gave the Vikings the series sweep over Milwaukee.

THE GAME
After taking a five-point lead into the second quarter at 16-11, the Vikings were able to extend their advantage to double-digits late in the frame, as eight straight points from Destiny Leo and Gabriella Smith put the Vikings up 34-23 heading into the halftime break.

Cleveland State was able to hold its double-digit lead throughout the opening minutes of the third quarter, including a 13-point lead at 40-27 following an Amele Ngwafang layup at the 7:30 mark.

Over the second part of the frame the Panthers were able to chip away at the Cleveland State lead though, as they cut the advantage down to just six points, heading into the fourth quarter with the Vikings leading 47-41.

The Panthers continued their momentum over the first part of the fourth quarter then, as Milwaukee was able to tie the contest at 49-49, before 10 straight points from Cleveland State put the Vikings back up by double-digits at 59-49 on a Leo three-pointer with 3:38 left on the clock.

Cleveland State was then able to hold off another late Panther run, as a pair of free throws from Moore and Carmen Villalobos over the final minute clinched the 63-56 victory for the Vikings to close out regular season play.

Cleveland State will host a quarterfinal contest in the 2023 Barbasol Horizon League Tournament next Thursday, March 2, with tipoff set for 5:30 p.m. inside the Wolstein Center.
