Abshaw Picks Up Freshman Of The Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – For the fifth time this season Cleveland State redshirt freshman Ashanti Abshaw picked up a weekly honor from the Horizon League, as she was named the Freshman of the Week after leading the Vikings to a 72-69 victory over UIC last weekend.

Abshaw is one of just four freshmen/redshirt freshmen to be honored as Horizon League Freshman of the Week this season, and one of three to earn the honor at least five times this year.

Against UIC last time out, Abshaw led the Vikings with her eighth double-double of the season with 23 points and 10 rebounds. Abshaw, who ranks sixth among Horizon League players averaging 15.8 points per game, has notched a team-best seven 20-point games this season.

With her 23 points against the Flames, Abshaw set a program record for freshman/redshirt freshman scoring in a season, as she finished the game with 396 points on the year. The previous record was 387 points and was set by Debra Taylor during the 1987-88 season. Abshaw leads Cleveland State in scoring and rebounding (232 boards) this year, while she has also tallied 56 steals and 28 assists.

Abshaw and the Vikings will close out the regular season this week, hosting Valparaiso tonight (Monday, February 29 @ 5:30 p.m.) and traveling to Wright State (Thursday, March 3) and Northern Kentucky (Saturday, March 5) this weekend.
