Women’s Basketball’s Scott Named Head Coach At Detroit

DETROIT, Mich. – Former Cleveland State women's basketball associate head coach Bernard Scott has been announced as the new women's basketball head coach at The University of Detroit Mercy. Scott was announced as the head coach on Tuesday, May 5 and will be formerly introduced at a press conference on Wednesday, May 6.

Scott was part of the Cleveland State coaching staff for the past five years, serving as associate head coach for the last two seasons.

"Bernard has spent the last 15 years preparing for this opportunity. He has been refining his skills in recruiting, scouting, and player development, as well as preparing to handle the day-to-day management of a program," Cleveland State women's basketball head coach Kate Peterson Abiad said. "He will provide great leadership at Detroit, while creating an environment for student-athletes to succeed while being cared for. While we hate to see him depart Cleveland State, we are all very happy for him as he begins this new journey in his career."

Scott, who is a 15-year collegiate coaching veteran, will be serving in his first head coaching role of his career. Throughout his coaching tenure Scott has made stops at Cleveland State, Youngstown State, Arizona, Dayton, and Toledo – serving as assistant coach/associate head coach with each of these programs.

Scott was instrumental as a five-year member of the Cleveland State coaching staff, and helped guide the Vikings to their best season over the last five years during 2014-15. Last season, the Vikings earned an at-large bid to the WNIT, finished third in the Horizon League standings, and notched a 19-13 overall record.

While at Cleveland State, Scott helped guide five players to All-Horizon League honors, including a pair of Defensive Players of the Year in Shalonda Winton (2012-13) and Shawnita Garland (2010-11).

Scott will be the 11th head coach in Detroit women's basketball history, and will assume his duties immediately.
