CLEVELAND, Ohio - After serving as an assistant coach with the Cleveland State women's basketball team for the past three seasons, Bernard Scott has been promoted to associate head coach as announced by head coach Kate Peterson Abiad. Scott's new title and job responsibilities will begin immediately.

"I really appreciate the confidence that Kate has in my abilities as a coach and as a leader with the women's basketball program," Scott said. "Cleveland State is a great institution, and working under Kate has allowed me to grow as a coach - both on and off the court. I am always striving to be the best coach that I can be, and hopefully we will be able to take the women's basketball program to the next level in the coming years."

During his time with the Vikings, Scott has been involved in all facets of the program, including on-floor coaching, individual workouts, recruiting and opponent scouting and post player development. He will also now serve as CSU's defensive coordinator - planning and implementing game-time defensive strategies.

"This is very deserving for Bernard, we have been honored to have him as part of our women's basketball program for the past three seasons," Peterson Abiad said. "Bernard definitely makes our program stronger with his enthusiasm, knowledge and passion for the game and for our profession. During his time as a Viking, he has made a tremendous impact on our coaching staff both on the court and off - which will hopefully continue throughout his career at Cleveland State."

Under his guidance, the Viking post players have recorded 57 double-doubles and two triple-doubles over the past three seasons. Last year, Scott helped Shalonda Winton earn Horizon League Defensive Player of the Year honors and a spot on the all-league first team, while etching her name in the CSU career record book. Scott was also instrumental in the development of Haley Schmitt and Imani Gordon, who became primary post players for the Vikings during 2012-13.

In his first year at CSU (2010-11) Scott helped the Vikings to a 21-12 record - with the 21 wins marking the second-best win total in program history and just the second time that CSU has won more than 20 games in a season. The Vikings advanced to the postseason for the third time in a four-year span that season, earning the top seed in the West Region of the Women's Basketball Invitational.

In total, Scott has 12 years of collegiate coaching experience - including stops at Youngstown State (2008-10), Arizona (2007-08), Dayton (2005-07) and Toledo (2001-05).
