Former Standouts Join Wrestling Squad As Assistant Coaches

Sept. 19, 2001

The Cleveland State University wrestling program recently signed two former wrestlers as assistant coaches. Tim Courtad and Ben Stehura, 2000 graduates of Ohio University and Lock Haven University, respectively, join Head Coach Jack Effner. In addition, Lieutenant Colonel Dave Hagg will help as a volunteer assistant coach.

"I'm very excited about our new staff since all three bring quality experience that can benefit our student-athletes," said Effner. "Courtad is an All-American who can help the upper weights, Stehura is an excellent teacher from a very good program and Colonel Hagg is a role model who can provide leadership."

Courtad, a native of Aurora, Ohio, previously was an assistant coach at Clarion University since his graduation from Ohio in 2000 with a degree in Sport Industry. He also has taught at Bruce Baumgartner's World Class Wrestling Camp since 1997. The heavyweight earned All-American status as a senior at Ohio by placing fifth at the NCAA Championships. In addition, Courtad is a U.S. Open Freestyle All-American and two-time University Nationals All-American.

Stehura, from Mill Hall, Pennsylvania, graduated from Lock Haven University with a degree in secondary education. Stehura has been a wrestling coach at Bucktail Junior/Senior High School and an instructor for Lock Haven University Summer Camps. Additionally, he has also been a crisis counselor and substitute teacher at Bishop Neuman High School in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. As a wrestler at Lock Haven Stehura was a three-year starter at 165 pounds and an NCAA Division I Tournament alternate. He was a member of the Eastern Wrestling League (EWL) All-Academic Team.

Colonel Hagg rejoins Effner after coaching with him at Army from 1989-1991. Currently, Hagg is a professor of military science and head of ROTC at John Carroll University and its cooperative schools of Cleveland State, Case Western Reserve and Baldwin Wallace. A 1981 graduate of West Point, Hagg continues to serve as an active duty Army officer. He has had tours of duty with the 3rd Armored Division, 10th Mountain Division and combat service with the 82nd Airborne Division. Hagg also served as Commander of the United States Army Recruiting for Washington, Alaska and Idaho.
