DeKALB, Ill. - The Cleveland State wrestling team closed out the calendar year with a win at the Northern Illinois Quad on Wednesday (Dec. 21) afternoon. The Vikings defeated Cumberland (Tenn.) before falling to No. 22 Kent State and the host Huskies.
CSU is now 3-6 overall.
In the first match of the day, the Vikings blanked Cumberland 49-0.
Nick Flannery (133) picked up the first of four pins in the match, pinning his opponent in 1:56. Koort Leyrer (165) recorded the quickest pin of the afternoon, earning the victory in 1:53.
Aric Thurn (174) and Garry Yarborogh (285) each earned their first dual meet victories of the season via pin - Thurn in 4:57 and Yarborogh in 2:52.
Mike Mencini (149) came out with a 16-0 technical fall while Josh Palivoda (141) and Tanner Lemon (157) each added four team points with major decision victories.
Ben Willeford (125), fresh off his title at the Cleveland State Open on Sunday (Dec. 18), defeated Eddie Ortiz by an 8-3 count. Corbin Boone (184) won on a 4-2 decision and Nick Anthony (197) was unopposed.
The 49-0 thrashing was five points shy of the school record for largest victory margin set in CSU's 54-0 win over Ohio Northern in January of 1996. Wednesday's victory was the largest margin for Cleveland State since Ben Stehura took over the program after the 2007-08 campaign, besting the previous best 43-point win over Wagner in 2008.
CSU was defeated by No. 22 Kent State by a score of 43-6 in the second match of the day, but Flannery picked up another pin to give him his team-high seventh of the season. He pinned Troy Opfer in 2:45.
Northern Illinois defeated Cleveland State in the final match of the day, 38-0.
The Vikings are done competing for the calendar year. They'll return to action on Jan. 1 when they compete in the Southern Scuffle on the campus of the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga. The two-day event begins at 9 a.m. on New Year's Day.
