CLEVELAND, Ohio - Cleveland State dropped its first Eastern Wrestling League match of the season, falling to No. 9 Pittsburgh 39-3 on Sunday (Dec. 11) afternoon.

The Panthers are the two-time defending league champions and have now won 13 consecutive EWL matches.

The Vikings fell to 2-4 on the season while Pittsburgh rebounded from its defeat at the hands of No. 6 Ohio State on Friday (Dec. 9) night to improve to 4-1.

Junior Chris Weber earned a 3-1 decision over Joel Yahner to pick up a win at 285 pounds. The win improved Weber to 3-3 in dual meets.

Weber trailed 1-0 entering the third period and tied it 20 seconds into the third period with an escape of his own.

With 51 seconds left, Weber was issued a stalling warning and Yahner tried to score off the reset. Weber countered with a takedown of his own to build a 3-1 lead.

Corey Carlo (165) lost his first dual match of the season to slide to 4-1. Carlo battled No. 33 Tyler Wilps who was 0-4 in dual meets but has already wrestled three ranked wrestlers.

Wilps had a takedown in the first period and opened the second with an escape to take a 3-0 lead before Carlo scored two points off a takedown to cut the deficit to one.

An escape and a takedown made it 6-3 in favor of Wilps before trainers had to come out and check on Carlo. After that point, Wilps went on a 6-2 run to earn the victory via 12-5 decision.

Wilps was one of eight nationally-ranked Panthers in the lineup.

The Vikings will host the Cleveland State Open a week from Sunday (Dec. 18).

Cleveland State will compete again as a team on Dec. 21st against Northern Illinois and No. 20 Kent State of the Mid-American Conference. CSU will battle the Huskies at 12:00 p.m. and the Golden Flashes at 2:00 p.m. in DeKalb, Ill.
