CLEVELAND, Ohio - Wins from Nick Flannery (133) and Josh Palivoda (141) weren't enough to help Cleveland State get past Eastern Michigan as the Eagles won a non-league match by a count of 33-9 at Woodling Gymnasium on Thursday (Dec. 1) night.

CSU fell behind 3-0 after Eastern Michigan took first bout of the night on a 7-4 decision.

Flannery got the Vikings on the right track when he pinned Jake Byers with seconds to spare, earning the defensive pin at the 6:52 mark. With the win, the sophomore improved to 4-1 in dual meets and earned his team-best third pin.

Palivoda extended his winning streak to five straight matches after taking a 7-3 decision over Seth Schaner at 141 pounds. As one of just two seniors on the CSU roster, the experienced Palivoda was aided by two first period takedowns. He took a 4-3 lead into the third period and scored on a reversal and used his 2:21 of riding time to pick up another point and clinch the victory.

An EMU pin at 149 pounds evened the score at 9-9, and the Eagles pulled away for good with another victory via fall at 157 pounds.

True freshman Sheldon Brandenburg was thrust into the starting spot at 165 pounds due to a late scratch. Wrestling in his first collegiate dual - and up a weight class - Brandenburg hung around before dropping a 9-5 decision.

The third and final EMU fall of the night came in the 197 pound bout.

Eastern Michigan won the final three matches -184, 197 and 285 pounds - via decision to add 12 points to its total and head back to Ypsilanti, Mich. with a 4-1 record.

The Vikings fell to 2-3 overall.

Cleveland State will is off until next Sunday (Dec. 11) when they open Eastern Wrestling League competition against Pittsburgh. The Panthers are 3-0 and ranked No. 8 in the country in the latest NWCA/USA Today Coaches poll.
