CLARION, Pa. - Three different Cleveland State wrestlers placed at the 37th annual Eastern Wrestling League Championships, hosted by Clarion on Sunday (March 4). Corey Carlo (165) took third while Ben Willeford (125) was fifth and Aric Thurn (174) took sixth. As a team, the Vikings placed seventh for the third consecutive season.

Pittsburgh won the event with 135.5 points, just ahead of Edinboro who racked up 116.5 points and West Virginia (112). Host Clarion was fourth with 91 points, narrowly edging out Bloomsburg and their 89.5 points. Lock Haven was sixth with 64.5 points and the Vikings had 23 points to finish ahead of Millersville who rounded out the group with 6.5 points.

Carlo won his opener against West Virginia's Kyle Eason, 5-2. In CSU's last dual meet on Feb. 19, Carlo narrowly edged Eason 2-1.

After being knocked off by Clarion standout Bekzod Abdurakhmanov who was 6-0 in league matches this season, the CSU junior rebounded with a 9-7 victory over Bloomsburg's Chris Smith to set up another match with Eason.

Carlo won on a 3-1 count to defeat WVU's 165-pounder for the third time in two weeks and clinch a top-three finish, topping his fifth place finish at 157 points back in his freshman season.

Willeford - a fourth place finisher last season - dropped his first match against West Virginia's Shane Young on a 9-2 count. He then fell to Lock Haven's Bobby Rehm via an 8-4 decision but responded with a 3-1 win over Bloomsburg's Sean Boylan to take fifth.

Thurn was pinned by Bloomsburg's Mike Dessino but came back with a pin of his own, recording the fall against Millersville's Zach Pincus at the 6:42 mark. Back-to-back losses to Lock Haven's Seth Creasy and West Virginia's Lance Bryson landed Thurn in sixth place.

Nick Flannery (133), Josh Palivoda (141), Lawrence Cavello (149), Brandon Sommers (157), Corbin Boone (184), Nick Anthony (197) and Garry Yarborogh (285) all participated and lost their first two bouts.
