Cleveland, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team had its best EWL match of the year, when Mike Mencini, Dan Castillo and Corey Carlo were victorious for the Vikings, falling short against West Virginia, 34-11 on Senior Night in Woodling Gymnasium.

"Everyone came out ready to wrestle tonight and that was very evident in the solid performance that we had from everyone tonight," head coach Ben Stehura said. "When you can look at the scoreboard and see that you are tied with West Virginia, that is a great feeling. We really left everything on the mat tonight, with everyone putting out strong matches. After tonight I think everyone's confidence will be up and we will be ready to compete at the EWL Championships coming up in a few weeks."

Mike Mencini got things started for the Vikings at 141 pounds, recording a 21-5 technical fall over West Virginia's Ryan Ramano. Mencini recorded two points in the middle of the first period after being down 4-1 and was able to score a two point takedown to even the score at 5-5 before taking an 8-5 lead to go into the second period.

Mencini recorded a seven points in the second period to take a 15-5 lead heading into the third, and was able to secure five additional points by the middle of the third period scoring the 21-5 technical fall.

Dan Castillo followed suit at 149 pounds, earning a 5-4 decision over Jonathon Waldron. Castillo came back from being down 2-1 after the first period and scored an early escape point to tie the score 2-2 early in the second period. Waldron made a push early in the third period, going up 4-2 but Castillo went on to score three points with one minute left in the period and held on for the 5-4 victory.

Corey Carlo was the final Viking to record a win on the night, his coming in the 157 pound weight class against Kyle Eason. Carlo ended the first period down 2-1 after scoring a point as time ran out, but was able to event the score at three in the middle of the second period. Once again Carlo was able to score two points as time ran out, ending the second period with a 5-3 lead. He went on to earn two early points in the third, finishing with a 7-3 lead.

The Vikings have a few weeks to prepare for the EWL Championships that will be held on Sunday, March 7 and will be hosted by West Virginia. Action begins at 8:00 a.m. in Morgantown, W. Va.
