Cleveland, Ohio - Corey Carlo led the Vikings with a victory in the 157 pound weight class tonight, as Cleveland State fell to No. 18 Pittsburgh, 43-3. CSU is now 2-11 on the season and 0-1 in the Eastern Wrestling League, while Pittsburgh improves to 12-1-1 and 3-0 in the league.

"Once again everyone fought hard in their matches, and Carlo was able to come away with a victory for us," head coach Ben Stehura said. "Pittsburgh is one of the best teams in the country and for us to be able to compete with them says a lot for our program. The change from the beginning of the season up until now has been night and day for us, and hopefully we will only continue to get better as we get farther into EWL action."

Carlo defeated Pittsburgh's, Donnie Tasser in the fifth match of the night, recording the lone Viking victory of the evening.

One minute into the first period Carlo was able to put himself up 4-0 and was able to fight his way through the rest of the first and second periods. Going into the third period he was up 6-3 and would never relinquish his lead, finishing the match in a 7-3 decision.

Marcus Effner and Rob Michaels both had close matches for CSU, Effner in the 174 pound weight class and Michaels in the 165 pound weight class.

Effner battled through a scoreless first period against David Sullivan, before dropping a close 3-2 decision.

In the 165 class, Michaels went up 2-0 in the middle of the first period against Adam Counterman, and finished off the first period with a two-point move with one second left. Counterman battled back throughout the second period and had the 6-5 lead going into period number three.

With just 20 seconds left on the clock, Michaels went up 7-6 right before Counterman made a two-point move to take the 8-7 victory.

The Vikings return to action next Saturday (Jan. 30) when they travel to Lock Haven to continue EWL action at 1:00 p.m.
