CAMPBELL, N.C. - Five different Vikings picked up wins on Monday (Jan. 9) as Cleveland State dropped both of its dual matches in Campbell, N.C., falling to Appalachian State 31-6 and the host Campbell Camels 30-10.
The Vikings are now 3-9 on the year.
Aric Thurn picked up his second dual meet win of the season when he beat Appalachian State's Andrew Downs by way of an 8-4 decision. Nick Anthony followed with a 12-6 decision at 197 pounds to tack on an additional three points for CSU.
Things got started on the right foot in the match with Campbell as the Vikings won the first three bouts.
Ben Willeford, a winner yesterday against Tennessee-Chattanooga, improved to 13-11 on the season and earned his fifth dual meet victory of the season in a 9-3 win over Grabiel Soto.
Nick Flannery followed with his team-best 17th victory at 133 pounds when he knocked off Tanner Bidelspach on a 7-1 decision in a re-match from the second day of last weekend's Southern Scuffle.
Josh Palivoda edged out Jordan Tolbert 4-3 to win a hotly-contested bout at 141 pounds.
With seven victories each, Flannery and Palivoda are now tied for the team lead in dual meet wins.
In the match with Campbell, the banged-up Vikings had Koort Leyrer make his debut at 174 pounds after he wrestled his first 18 matches of the season at 165 pounds. Aric Thurn, the starter at 174, slid to 184 pounds and narrowly lost a 12-9 bout.
The Vikings, who were in Tennessee Jan. 1-2 for the Southern Scuffle and returned to Chattanooga for a match yesterday before making the trek to North Carolina, will be in Virginia on Saturday (Jan. 14) to participate in the George Mason Patriot Duals. CSU will take on VMI, Davidson and George Mason. Times are yet to be announced.
