CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Vikings (4-7, 2-2) toppled Ohio (5-4, 1-2) 24-19 during Youth Night on Friday evening. Before the Cleveland State match, youth wrestlers from Lake Catholic and Brecksville competed inside Woodling Gymnasium.
The Green and White couldn't have asked for a better start, rattling off the first five matches to lead 17-0. Ben Aranda opened the scoring with a pin in 1:49 to give the home team a 6-0 advantage. Nick Molchak followed with a 5-2 decision at 133-pounds to make it 9-0.
Dylan Layton secured a 17-1 tech fall at 141-pounds, upping the margin to 14-0. A 4-2 victory by Douglas Terry at 149-pounds capped off the tremendous start.
Ohio mounted a comeback as the Bobcats claimed the next four matches to jump in front, 19-17. The first 12 points came on consecutive pins at 157 and 165 pounds. A 4-2 decision at 174-pounds was followed by an 8-0 major decision to give the visitors their only lead of the night.
No. 33 Ben Smith halted the momentum and put the Vikings back on top, 21-19, with a 10-1 major decision at 197-pounds. No. 20 Daniel Bucknavich secured the win for the Green and White with a 4-1 decision at 285-pounds as Cleveland State won the match, 24-19.
Cleveland State will compete in its final open of the season at Edinboro on Saturday, Feb. 3.
