CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University wrestling team dropped its home opener to Eastern Michigan, 29-13, Friday evening inside Woodling Gymnasium.

A trio of Vikings posted wins on the day, led by redshirt senior Gabe Stark notching a pin at 174 pounds.

Redshirt senior Nick Corba won via a shutout major decision at 184 pounds while redshirt sophomore Ryan Montgomery also won at 157 pounds.

After CSU dropped the opening bout of the night at 149 pounds, Montgomery won in thrilling fashion in the night's second match. After falling into a 2-0 hole, Montgomery would tie the match at 2-2 with a pair of escapes. His opponent took a 3-2 lead, but he once again came back to tie the bout. With the score tied and 15 seconds left in regulation, Montgomery secured a takedown to claim victory.

True freshman Georgio Poullas, competing for the first time this season at 165 pounds, also came back in his match but was unable to come out on top. Poullas trailed, 3-0, after two periods but rallied to tie the score in the final frame. However, he would go on to drop a 7-5 decision.

Stark then picked up his 10th win of the season with a first-period pin. The win via fall was his team-leading fourth of the season and tied the team score.

Corba then used a thoroughly convincing win to push the Vikings into the lead. He took a 3-0 lead after the first period and used four near-fall points in the second to break it open. He would win 11-0 after racking up over five minutes of riding time in the match.

After Eastern Michigan won at 197 pounds to retake the lead, sophomore Collin Kelly went up against nationally ranked EMU heavyweight Gage Hutchison. Kelly trailed just, 1-0, after two periods and was in the match until the end but would drop a 2-0 decision.

Redshirt senior John Martin took an early lead at 125 pounds and was tied, 4-4, during the second period. However, he would not score the rest of the way in dropping his bout via decision.

After the Eagles clinched the team win at 133 pounds, junior Evan Cheek took the lead in the final match. He used a first-period takedown and a second-period escape to take a 3-0 lead, but his opponent picked up his level and would claim a win by three points.

Corba now has a team-leading 13 wins on the season, including six of the bonus-point variety.

The Vikings will be right back in action at home Saturday afternoon when they continue their annual series with local foe John Carroll. The first bout is set for 2:00 p.m.
