Corba Takes Third at Season-Opening Event

Corba Takes Third at Season-Opening Event

CLARION, Pa. - Redshirt senior Nick Corba's third-place finish highlighted the season-opening event for the Cleveland State University wrestling team, as it competed at the Clarion Open Sunday at Clarion's Student Recreation Center.

"Overall I thought it was a good opening weekend for us," head coach Ben Stehura said. "There are some things we need to work on and fine tune, but it was a good start to the season. Guys got a lot of matches. It was a pretty good tournament with a lot of quality matches, and that's what we were after. It's something to build on for the season."

Junior John Vaughn collected four wins on the day and advanced to the consolation semifinals in his weight class.

Of the 15 wrestlers that competed in a CSU singlet Sunday, two were true freshmen and three more were redshirt freshmen.

Corba had a dominating run to the semifinals at the 184-pound weight class in his first action since competing at the 2017 NCAA Championships. He picked up a pin, a shutout decision and another pin against a trio of wrestlers on Division I rosters competing unattached. He had leads of 10-0 and 12-0 in the two matches in which he ended up posting pins.

In the semifinals, Corba was tied, 4-4, with an Atlantic Coast Conference foe but ended up dropping a three-point decision. He rallied from the setback in the best way possible, notching a comfortable victory via an 8-1 decision before finishing his day with a dominating 11-0 major decision.

Competing at 165 pounds, Vaughn opened his day by running out to a 7-1 lead en route to a 7-4 victory against an opponent from the host school. He lost his second match via decision after it was tied entering the third period.

Vaughn tallied an 11-4 win in his first consolation match before coming from behind to claim a 3-1 victory over another Clarion opponent in a sudden-victory session. He then used more late heroics, as he took down Bryce Martin of Indiana, who was seeded fifth. Trailing by a point with 15 seconds left, Vaughn posted a takedown to pick up an exciting victory.

Junior Evan Cheek and redshirt senior Gabe Stark both advanced to the quarterfinals at 133 pounds and 174 pounds, respectively, as both picked up three Division I wins on the day.

Cheek posted a technical fall victory via shutout with his two other wins coming by a combined 12-3 score. His quarterfinal loss came via decision after he was tied entering the third period.

Stark was involved in a trio of tight matches in the championship bracket. In his first match against an ACC opponent, the bout was scoreless entering the third period, but Stark would go on to notch a 4-1 win. Stark trailed by a point in his second round match entering the final period but used an escape and takedown to post a 9-7 win. Stark had a lead with under 90 seconds to play in his quarterfinal bout but would drop a two-point affair. His final win on the day was of a simpler variety, as he posted a pin in under a minute.

Redshirt junior Andrew Coghill (133 pounds) and redshirt sophomore Grant Turnmire (149) both tallied two bonus-point wins on the day, with the former pinning an opponent from Kent State inside 20 seconds.

Redshirt freshman Ryan Ford (149), true freshman John Kelbly (197), redshirt sophomore Ryan Montgomery (157) and redshirt sophomore Caleb Stockmaster (174) each contributed a win on the day with Ford notching a major decision over an ACC foe.

Cleveland State will continue its season at the EMU Open next Saturday, Nov. 11.
