Vikings Head to Undefeated Rider Sunday

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University wrestling team has a challenge ahead of it this weekend as it continues Eastern Wrestling League action by heading to nationally ranked Rider Sunday, Jan. 22.

Cleveland State will be looking to bounce back from a 27-8 setback last time out in its EWL opener at George Mason. This is the second of eight consecutive duals for the Vikings to close the regular season.

Redshirt junior Nick Corba and true freshman Devon Pingel both notched victories via major decision in the loss to the Patriots.

Pingel claimed a 10-2 victory to move his season record to 13-8. He owns seven bonus-point wins on the season, including five falls. Corba came away with a 14-3 victory last weekend, twice earning near fall points, to improve to 12-5 on the season. Corba now has eight bonus-point victories in the 2016-17 campaign.

Sophomore Evan Cheek is also a member of the double-digit wins club as he owns a 15-8 record, all coming at 141 pounds. He has nine victories via fall or technical fall on the year without suffering a setback in either of those categories.

The series between the Vikings and Broncs is tied, 2-2, with CSU owning a 2-1 edge since Rider joined the EWL. The score for the winning team in the series has been either 21 or 24. Three of the four duals were decided by six points or fewer. Corba, redshirt junior John Martin and senior Nick Montgomery are the three active Vikings that own dual wins over a Rider opponent in their career. Montgomery posted a fall to clinch CSU's first-ever victory over Rider in the penultimate bout of the teams' 2014 meeting.

Rider is off to a 6-0 start and is one of only four unbeaten teams remaining in Division I. The Broncs are ranked 20th nationally by FloWrestling and 25th in the USA Today/NWCA Coaches Poll. Rider has won five of its six duals by at least 14 points, and the Broncs are scheduled to host Edinboro Friday evening before facing CSU. Sophomore Chad Walsh (165) is one of the leading Rider wrestlers as he owns an 18-2 mark on the season and made a run to the Midlands Championship. Junior BJ Clagon (157) and senior Ryan Wolfe (197) are both nationally ranked by various outlets with Wolfe sitting inside the top 10 according to FloWrestling.

After this dual, Cleveland State will finally have the chance to contest a dual at home as it welcomes EWL member Lock Haven Thursday, Jan. 26.
