Wrestling Finishes With Three Top-Five Places At Annual CSU Open

CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State wrestling team hosted its annual CSU Open on Saturday afternoon, an all-day open tournament format that drew 260 wrestlers from numerous schools throughout the country.

While there were no team scores from the event, the Vikings turned in three separate top-five finishes by the end of the night. Cleveland State head coach Ben Stehura has continually acknowledged the competition of the tournament and its growing popularity over the last several years. According to Stehura, there was a wait list of competitors due to such popularity.

In all for the Vikings, nine wrestlers competed on Saturday, three of which were unattached. Jonathan Martin (125), Mike Kostandaras (133), Jayce Carr (141), John Vaughn (157), Gabe Stark (174) and Sam Wheeler (197) all wrestled for Cleveland State while Grant Turnmire (149), Ryan Montgomery (149) and Nick Corba (184) all wrestled unattached. CSU did not wrestle the 165 pound or heavyweight weight classes.

UP NEXT:
The open was the third-straight home meet for CSU, part of a four-meet stretch at Woodling Gym that will conclude next Saturday (Dec. 19) at 7:00 p.m. when the Vikings welcome EWL rival Edinboro to Woodling Gym. The showdown with Edinboro will be the first EWL meet of the season for CSU and the last chance for Viking fans to catch Cleveland State at home in the 2015 calendar year.
