Viking All-Americans Recognized in Woodling Gymnasium

CLEVELAND, OH - Cleveland State University recognized all of the program's All-American wrestlers following the Vikings 41-0 victory over Bloomsburg on Saturday (Feb. 14) in the Woodling Gymnasium. Individual banners were hung in honor of the eight honorees. 

The first honoree, Lee Barylski, was the first All-American in program history, earning the honor at 142 pounds placing fifth in 1970. As a member of the CSU Hall of Fame, Lee went undefeated in 1967-68 and lost just four dual matches in three years. 

Paul Azzariti was the second wrestler in program history to be honored as an All-American by placing sixth in 1971 in the heavyweight division. 

At 142 pounds, Frank Yoo placed third in 1972. He went 33-4-1 in duals for his career and was a four-time national qualifier. Frank went undefeated in duals in 1968-69 and is a member of the CSU Hall of Fame. 

Tom Cavanaugh finished runner-up at 150 pounds at the 1973 national tournament, the highest ever finish by a CSU wrestler at nationals. In his three seasons at CSU, he compiled 70 victories. 

The next honoree, Tony DiGiovanni, was CSU's first two-time All-American finishing fifth in 1972 and sixth in 1973 at 134 pounds at the NCAA Championships. He posted a 45-2-2 career record in dual meets and was undefeated as a senior. He earned the Most Valuable Wrestler in 1975-76 and posted 72 dual meet points in 1972-73, the most in school history. 

Toby Matney was the first NCAA Division I All-American in program history finishing fifth at 158 puonds at the 1979 Championship. His 215 dual meet points are a school record and won 112 matches during his career. 

Dave Zahoransky was the first Cleveland State wrestler to ever earn NCAA Division I honors two times in a career, finishing eighth at the 1986 and 1988 NCAA Championships at 142 pounds. He is a member of the CSU Hall of Fame and the National Wrestling Hall of Fame. 

Our last honoree, Dan Carcelli, earned All-American honors in 1995, placing fourth at 142 pounds. The CSU Most Outstanding Wrestler for three straight seasons holds the school record for most consectutive dual meet victories with 36 and lost just two dual matches in his career.
