Box Score

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The Cleveland State (1-4) men's tennis team defeated Youngstown State, 4-3, Saturday afternoon in Youngstown. Reinstated last fall, the Vikings earned the first win for the program since it was suspended in 1992.

CSU picked up a point in doubles action as senior Franco Gallo (Elyria, Ohio/Elyria) and freshman James Koorey (Parma, Ohio/Parma) defeated Kevin Schaffert and Kyle Kestner, 8-4, at No. 2 and the Penguins forfeited the match at No. 3. At No. 1, YSU's Brandon William and Raul Pepino stopped sophomore Adam Mercurio (Lorain, Ohio/Lorain Catholic) and freshman Pat Leitner (Wadsworth, Ohio/Wadsworth), 8-1.

YSU rebounded in singles action to take each of the top three seeds in straight sets. However, Leitner earned a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 4 and sophomore Jeff Sutyak (Eastlake, Ohio/Eastlake North) won at No. 5, 6-2, 6-1. Those victories, coupled with YSU's forfeit at No. 6, were enough to propel the Vikings to the win.

CSU is in action again this weekend when it hosts MCC rivals Wright State (Mar. 31 at 2:00 p.m.) and Butler (Apr. 1 at Noon). All the action will take place at the Malaga Tennis Center at the corner of Chester Ave. and E. 21st Street.
