David Howell is in his fourth season as assistant coach with the Cleveland State tennis program. Howell joined the Viking staff in 2003 after spending the previous year as the interim head coach at Allegheny College in Meadville, Pa.

"Having David here is like having a second head coach," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He has been a vital part to the success that has taken place at CSU."

Before his stint at Allegheny, Howell worked as assistant coach at St. Lawrence University in Canton, N.Y. from 2000-02. This past summer he worked as the Tennis Director at the Country Club of Hudson. Along with his position as assistant coach for the Viking tennis program, he also serves as an assistant professional at the Western Reserve Racquet Club in Aurora. "The players enjoy playing for him," Etzkin said. "He has a great tennis mind and is willing to try whatever it takes to help the team improve."

Howell enjoyed a distinguished playing career at Allegheny College from 1996-2000, graduating with the most career singles, doubles and combined wins in school history. Howell also set the school's single-season doubles win mark at 20. He was twice named to the All-North Coast Conference first team and was a second team honoree four times.

A 2000 graduate of Allegheny College, Howell is United States Professional Tennis Association Certified. He earned his master's degree in general education from St. Lawrence in 2002.
