Phillips Records 3-0 Day To Open Notre Dame Invite

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team opened its 2019 fall campaign at the Bobby Bayliss Invitational Friday, led by Luke Phillips who posted a perfect 3-0 singles and doubles record on the day.

"For the first competitive day of the fall season I thought it was a good first day, but we definitely want to build on it tomorrow and continue our improvement," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Luke led the way for us, he went 3-0 on the day in singles and doubles, and had a great mindset and energy throughout the day. Although we weren't able to pick up as many singles wins as we would have liked, we had close matches on all of the courts and we were in every match – which was a positive thing to see."

The junior duo of Luke Phillips and Matthew Terry both picked up singles wins on the first day of the 2019 fall campaign, Phillips earning a 6-4, 6-1 win over Matt Che of Notre Dame, and Terry posting a 6-3, 7-5 victory over Illinois' Alex Bancila.

Phillips is now just two wins shy of recording his 50th career victory, as he enters tomorrow's action with 48 career wins.

In doubles play, Phillips and Raul Teichmann went 2-0 on the day, picking up wins against tandems from Louisville (6-2) and Marquette (6-3).
