Men’s Tennis Continues #HLMTEN Play Against Youngstown State

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State men's tennis team will close out the month of March on the road this weekend, facing Youngstown State on Saturday, March 30 in the second match of Horizon League regular season play.

Last Time Out…
The Vikings picked up a 7-0 victory at Green Bay in the Horizon League opener, marking the fourth sweep of the season for the Vikings and the third straight year that CSU has been victorious in the #HLMTEN opener.

Vikings On The Road
Saturday's match against the Penguins will mark the final contest of a four-match roadswing for the Vikings, as they will play the final three weeks of the month away from home. So far this season, Cleveland State owns an even 5-5 record when playing on the road.

#HLMTEN Preseason Poll
Earlier this season the Vikings were selected as the preseason favorite to win the Horizon League, picked to defend their title in the #HLMTEN Preseason Poll. The Vikings secured all seven first place votes, along with 49 points to beat out second place Youngstown State by 10 points. This marks the seventh year that the Horizon League has released a preseason tennis poll, with the Vikings now earning a top-two selection in six polls.

…Slade & Phillips In #HLMTEN Play
After picking up wins at Green Bay last time out, Benjamin Slade and Luke Phillips remained perfect in Horizon League regular season matches over the last two years, as both players now own an 8-0 record during this span. Phillips picked up a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory at No. 3 singles, while Slade earned a 6-7(7), 6-3, 1-0(9) win at the No. 4 spot against the Phoenix.

Mostardi Named #HLMTEN Singles Player of the Week
For the league-leading third time this season junior Nico Mostardi was named the Horizon League Singles Player of the Week, after picking up a 6-2, 6-2 victory against the Phoenix in the #HLMTEN opener. Mostardi improved to 18-10 overall this season and 10-6 this spring – one of four Vikings with double-digit singles wins during dual match play.

Terry Closing In On Win #50
Entering this weekend's match at Youngstown State, sophomore Matthew Terry is just four wins shy of notching his 50th career victory. Last week, Terry notched a 6-1, 6-3 win at Green Bay, and currently has 46 career singles victories. This season, Terry stands at 18-10 overall and 8-6 this spring.

Slade & Mostardi On CSU Singles Wins List
After picking up wins at Green Bay last weekend, Benjamin Slade and Nico Mostardi both added to their career win total, Slade entering Saturday's match tied for sixth on the CSU Singles Wins List and Mostardi ranking ninth. Slade enters the second week of #HLMTEN play with 73 career victories, while Mostardi currently owns 64 wins on his career.

Head Coach Brian Etzkin
Brian Etzkin is in his 17th year at the helm of the Vikings, owning a 246-177 dual match record. Last year, Etzkin guided the Vikings to their sixth Horizon League Tournament title and sixth trip to the NCAA Tournament, while posting his 13th winning season at Cleveland State.

Scouting The Penguins
Youngstown State enters Saturday's match with an 8-6 record on the year, including a 5-2 victory against Green Bay to begin league play last weekend. The Penguins were selected to finish second in the #HLMTEN Preseason Poll, and return seven letterwinners from last year's squad.

This will be the 27th meeting between the two teams under head coach Brian Etzkin, with the Vikings owning a 19-7 advantage in the all-time series.
