VanMeter Advances In Main Singles Draw At ITA Midwest Regional

UPDATED MAIN SINGLES DRAW | UPDATED DOUBLES DRAW

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team continued play at the ITA Midwest Regional Friday, with Joe VanMeter picking up an opening round win in the main singles draw.

"The highlight of the day was definitely Joe winning his opening round match in the main singles draw, and advancing to the Round of 32. Joe is now in a mix of the top 32 players in the region, and I think he has a good chance of continuing his winning ways tomorrow," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "Joe played some solid tennis today, and although he didn't have to necessarily be very flashy today, we won with a workman's like effort."

VanMeter, who is playing in the main singles draw at the Midwest Regional tournament for the second straight season, picked up a 6-4, 7-5 victory in his opening round match over Louis Phillipe Hamel of Northern Illinois. VanMeter notched his third straight victory of the fall season, and will now face fourth-seeded Aron Hiltzik of Illinois in a Round of 32 match.

With his singles victory Friday, VanMeter is now in eighth place by himself on the CSU wins list, finishing the day with 61 career wins. VanMeter is also one of four Horizon League players to advance to the Round of 32 at this year's Midwest Regional.

"Our doubles play wasn't what we were hoping for, and definitely wasn't our best showing, but I think with continued practice it will turn into a strength for us later in the spring season. In year's past we have been able to make some strong doubles runs at the regional tournament, so it was a bit of a disappointment to come away winless, but gives us something to work on before spring play starts up," Etzkin said.

The Vikings had three teams in action in the main doubles draw, with all three falling in matching 8-6 decisions. The three duos for CSU were Kevin Goth/Benjamin Slade, William Malm/Mirko Radosevic, and Andre Mick/VanMeter.

VanMeter's second round match is set to begin at 11:00 a.m. tomorrow morning (Saturday, October 24), and if he is victorious, he is scheduled to play in the Round of 16 at 2:30 p.m.
