Kuelker Picks Up Horizon League Player Of The Week Honors

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – After leading the Cleveland State men's tennis team to a pair of wins last weekend, senior Matt Kuelker has been named the Horizon League Player of the Week. This marks the first weekly honor for Kuelker, and the third weekly honor for the Vikings this season.

"Matt has gotten himself on a nice run lately, and has been playing good tennis and is a big part of the reason the team has posted six straight victories," head coach Brian Etzkin said. "He and Nolan have also been a spark at the No. 2 doubles position over the past couple weeks, which has been key in picking up some much-needed doubles points."

The Vikings picked up a 6-1 victory at Saint Louis last Friday, and a 4-3 victory at Southern Illinois last Saturday. With the wins, CSU extended its current win streak to six straight matches, and improved its season record to 7-4.

Kuelker, who has won six straight singles matches, went 2-0 at No. 2 singles over the weekend – one of three Vikings to notch perfect records against Saint Louis and Southern Illinois. Against the Billikens, Kuelker posted a 6-1, 6-2 win, and then came back to earn a 6-1, 6-1 victory against the Salukis. Kuelker now has a team-best 16-8 singles record this season, including a 9-2 mark this spring.

With his two singles victories last weekend, Kuelker moved into fifth place on the all-time wins list at Cleveland State, finishing the weekend with 72 career singles victories.

Kuelker also went 2-0 in doubles play over the weekend, teaming with Nolan Marks at No. 2 doubles. The duo picked up an 8-3 victory at Saint Louis, and an 8-4 victory at Southern Illinois. During the spring season, Kuelker and Marks own a 4-2 doubles record, with the four wins tied for top honors on the team.

Cleveland State will look to continue its win streak this weekend, as they begin their annual spring break trip at Abilene Christian (Saturday, March 8). CSU will also face SMU (Sunday, March 9) and Texas-Arlington (Tuesday, March 11) during the trip.
