KALAMAZOO, Mich. – The Cleveland State men's tennis team wrapped up action at the Western Michigan Invitational Sunday, splitting their singles matches and picking up a doubles victory.
"I thought we played better singles at spots today, it was the final day of the tournament so we really had to dig deep and push to finish the tournament with our strongest tennis," assistant coach Frank Polito said. "Matt Ford probably had the best weekend for us overall, he was really playing some strong tennis which will give us a major advantage if that continues throughout the season. We had a pretty balanced team in doubles, but I thought Matt Kuelker and Nolan ended on a high note, picking up our lone doubles win today."
The trio of Matt Kuelker, Matt Ford and Joe VanMeter picked up CSU's singles victories on Sunday, Kuelker playing in the Gold bracket and Ford and VanMeter playing in the Brown bracket. Kuelker defeated Rodrigo Oliveira from Illinois State, 7-6 (5), 7-6 (3), Ford earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Matthew Hamilton from WMU and VanMeter posted a 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (9) victory over Jeremy Schneider of Xavier.
In doubles, Kuelker and Nolan Marks posted an 8-4 victory over a duo from Western Michigan in the Black bracket, earning CSU's lone doubles victory on the final day.
Cleveland State will continue its fall schedule next weekend, when they participate in the Purdue Invitational, Friday, Sept. 20 through Sunday, Sept. 22.
