CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State swimming and diving teams had very successful fall seasons, and the rest of the country is starting to take notice. In the latest College Swimming Coaches Association of America/CollegeSwimming.com Mid-Major Division I poll, the men's team is ranked fourth overall, while the women are 15th. The poll was released on Monday, Dec. 20.

The men moved up one place from fifth in the previous mid-major poll, which was released on Nov. 17. This marks the first time the CSU women's team has ever been ranked in this poll.

"The accomplishments of these teams is evident in where they were ranked nationally," head coach Wally Morton said. "We're very excited about where we're ranked, and we know that our best swimming is still ahead of us."

The men's team (9-1-1) earned 229.8 points in the most recent poll, placing them 23.8 points behind first-place Navy (253.6). Princeton is second (238.7) and Cal State Bakersfield is third (230.2). Denver (229.0) rounds out the top five.

The Viking men are also slotted seven spots ahead of Milwaukee which, with 224.4 points, is the only other Horizon League team ranked.

The women's team was ranked 15th with 227.4 points. Miami of Ohio owns the top spot in the poll with 259.6 points, followed by Princeton (250.7), Harvard (244.3), Denver (243.3) and Navy (241.9).

The CSU women are off to its best start in program history, compiling an 11-1 record this past fall. The team is only three wins shy of the most ever in a season (14) and Vikings have set two Horizon League and 10 CSU records this season.

"This is a great accomplishment for our women's team," Morton said. "The women have never been ranked before, and, at 15th, we're just behind Milwaukee (14th with 228.2 points) and we're ahead of some quality programs."

The Mid-Major Top-25 rankings are determined using an objective point system to compare teams' relative strength in a traditional dual meet lineup as submitted by participating teams. The poll ranks programs outside of the six BCS conferences and the Mountain West who also provide fewer than one-half of the allowable scholarships under the NCAA rules.

The poll is released five times during the season. Future polls will be released on Jan. 12, Feb. 9 and March 9.

Both Cleveland State swimming and diving teams will return to action when the Vikings will travel to Puerto Rico to participate in the Holiday Invitational, scheduled for Jan. 8.
