Vikings Sweep Horizon League Weekly Diving Honors

Dec. 7, 2010

CLEVELAND, Ohio - After sweeping the City College Meet last Tuesday (Nov. 30), the Vikings have now swept the Horizon League Diver of the Week awards, with juniors Kacey Cummings and Matt DiMasso being honored for the week of Nov. 29.

"The diving team has had an outstanding fall semester," head coach Wally Morton said. "I was happy with Kacey and Matt's performances this past week, and I know their best performances of the season are still ahead."

Cummings was named diver of the week for the first time this season and the third time in her Cleveland career. The award comes after she qualified for the NCAA zone cut in the 3-meter dive (296.00) and came within a tenth of a point of qualifying in the 1-meter (264.90) at the City College Meet. Her score in the 3-meter is the second best in the Horizon League this year.

Cummings won both events at the City College Meet, as the Viking women defeated John Carroll (198-33), Canisius (186-54) and Notre Dame College (179-57) to improve 11-1 on the season, the second most wins in program history.

"Kacey had very good scores this week," diving coach Rich Karban said. "She has been working real hard, and it's good to see that hard work come to fruition."

DiMasso won the 3-meter dive for the first time this season, beating nine other divers with a score of 283.60. He also placed second out of 10 divers in the 1-meter dive, finishing with a score of 273.50.

The performance helped CSU sweep the City College Meet, with the Vikings beating John Carroll (200-41), Notre Dame College (198-40) and Canisius (179-64).

This is the second time overall and the first this season that DiMasso has been chosen diver of the week.

"This was probably the best performance of Matt's CSU career," Karban said. "He's always been a hard worker, and this performance is proof that, if you work hard, good things will happen."

The Vikings are currently on a break from competition until Jan. 8, when Cleveland State is scheduled to participate in the Holiday Invitational.
