Schantz Named Horizon League Scholar-Athlete Of The Week For Fourth Time

CLEVELAND, Ohio - Senior Bjorn Schantz has once again been named the Horizon League Men's Scholar-Athlete of the Week. Schantz, who posted a league-best time of 1:39.75 in the 200 free against 14th-ranked Ohio State on Tuesday (Nov. 21) against Wright State, has won the award four times over the last six weeks, which is the most of any league student-athlete. The league office made the announcement on Tuesday (Nov. 28).

 

Schantz, has won the award twice in both October and November, is currently in the league's top two in the 200, 500 (4:32.58- 2nd) and 1,000 (9:28.49- 2nd) free. He also swims the anchor leg of CSU's 400 free relay team.

 

Schantz, an international business and marketing major, owns a 3.9 GPA and is on the Dean's List at Cleveland State. The Loddekopinge, Sweden native is a member of the Horizon League All-Academic team. He also won the CSU Athletic Academic Excellence Award in 2005.

 

"For Bjorn to be continued to be recognized as a student first and an athlete second is an incredible honor," head coach Wally Morton said. "He combines the best of both qualities."

 

The Horizon League instituted the scholar-athlete of the week awards for this academic year as a way to recognize outstanding academic and athletic achievement by its student-athletes. To be eligible for the honor, a student-athlete must maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20 or better (on a 4.00 scale), have completed at least one year at the member institution and passed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours as well as  perform well during the week's competition. Winners are selected by a group of league faculty athletic representatives from nominations provided by sports information directors.
