Speech Given At The Dedication Of Lane 3 In The Name Of John Doc Wilson

Nov. 22, 2002

Dr. John P.(Doc)Wilson has volunteered as an announcer, head timer, counselor, and a friend of the Cleveland State University swimming team for the past twenty-nine years. He is the first CSU professor to be a major contributor to the Robert F. Busbey Scholarship Fund for Fifth year grants and swimming financial aid. Doc swims about three miles everyday at the Busbey Natatorium. When he arrived on CSU's campus in 1973, he was able to enter the Natatorium immediately after the pools had been filled. He was the first person to swim in the Busbey Natatorium.

Doc Wilson is a world reknowned researcher and writer on Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. He has written numerous books and coined the term, "Vietnam Stress Syndrome". His accomplishments rank among the most recognized figures in his field. His most remarkable attribute is how much he cares for the students of CSU. He has spent countless hours, making our University a friendly and caring place for everyone.

Doc has always been an admirer of Bob Busbey's accomplishments which included being an Olympic coach but even more importantly his intellect. John had many conversation with Bob until the time of his death about a wide range of subjects including art, music, physics and sailing.

We thank Doc for the many volunteer of service given and his pledge of over $10,000 toward student scholarships in the name of Robert F. Busbey.
