Omar ElGamal Inks With Men's Swimming

Nov. 22, 2002

CLEVELAND - Head men's swimming coach Wally Morton has announced that Omar ElGamal (Woodmere, Ohio) has signed a National Letter of Intent to attend Cleveland State in the fall.

"Omar will be a key contributor to our distance freestyle events for next year," noted Morton. "Very few college coaches are aware that this extremely talented swimmer recently arrived from Egypt."

ElGamal - who plans on majoring in engineering - trains with the Lake Erie Silver Dolphins and is currently at senior at Orange High School, where he will swim this year under the tutelage of Ohio High School Hall of Fame coaches Jerry Holtrey and Todd Boyle.

"He is swimming for two of the best coaches in the country and will only get faster," said Morton. "Last year as a fifteen-year old he went 4:46 in the 500 yard free and 9:50 in the 1000. Both times would have been among the leaders in the Horizon League."

Currently 5-0 on the year, the men's swimming and diving team hosts Ohio State on Tuesday, Nov. 26 at 5:00 p.m. in the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.
