COLUMBUS, Ohio - Kacey Cummings and Josh Gonzalez represented Cleveland State's swimming and diving team at the NCAA Zone 'C' Diving Championships, held in Columbus, Ohio from March 10-12. The competition was a qualifying meet for the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, set to be held later this month.
Both Cummings and Gonzalez qualified for the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events, and the two Vikings competed against the best collegiate divers in the region.
"It's always an honor to go onto a postseason competition," head coach Wally Morton said. "I'm very proud of their accomplishments throughout the season, and I thought they had fairly solid performances this weekend."
Cummings scored 202.40 in the 3-Meter dive on Thursday (March 10), ranking her 46th overall. She improved her placing in the 1-Meter dive on Friday (March 11), taking 36th overall with a score of 221.45.
Gonzalez started the men's competition with a 189.45 score in the 1-Meter event on Thursday. On Friday he competed in the 3-Meter dive, placing 36th with a score of 226.70.
"They did a nice job," diving coach Rich Karban said. "They seemed a little tight on the first day, but on the second they both loosened up and I was happy with their dives.
"This is a very competitive meet. Some of the best divers in the country compete in it, and so it was a very good experience for both Kacey and Josh. Having gone this year will help them when they qualify to compete at Zones again next year."
