Vikings Set to Close Regular Season at Home

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams return home this weekend for their regular-season finales.

CSU will host Kenyon Saturday, Feb. 1, in a dual slated to start at 10:30 a.m. The meet will begin with diving and will also feature diving during the first break.

During the second break of the dual, CSU will honor its seniors in a senior recognition ceremony.

Cleveland State will be competing for the second straight weekend after contesting a pair of duals in Michigan last weekend.

The CSU men dropped duals to Michigan State and Oakland although the Vikings were quite competitive in defeat to a Big Ten foe. The Spartans topped the Vikings, 165.5-135.5 with each team winning eight events. Juniors Matt Akers, Timothy Kubacki and Dominik Niedzialek each won a pair of events at MSU while sophomore Jack Krusinski was named Horizon League Swimmer of the Week for the third time this season after winning events in both duals.

The Viking women also had setbacks to the Spartans and Grizzlies last weekend, but there were highlights nonetheless. The CSU women ended the Oakland meet with a bang as they won the 400 freestyle relay with a huge comeback. Senior Lauren Frank, freshman Rachel Contich and seniors Gabriella Marinelli and Madi Jaszcz touched the wall first in 3:32.65 after the Vikings had trailed by over two seconds entering the final leg. Contich (500 free) and Jaszcz (100 back) added individual event wins against Oakland while freshman Emma Kerro won 3-meter diving with an NCAA Zone qualifying score.

The Vikings have not competed against Kenyon in dual action since the 2012-13 season. That meet came in Columbus, Ohio as part of a tri-dual featuring Ohio State.

Kenyon owns a 5-2 record on the men's side and a 4-4 mark on the women's side entering the weekend. Both squads will host Ohio Wesleyan in their final home dual of the season Friday evening. The Lords' only losses came to Ohio State and Michigan State while they also claimed a win over Xavier. The Ladies also own a win over Xavier while three of their four losses have come to Division I foes.

Cleveland State will next be in action Feb. 19-22 when it heads to the Horizon League Championships.
