Akers, Krusinski Earn Weekly HL Honors

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Junior Matt Akers and sophomore Jack Krusinski of the Cleveland State University men's swimming & diving team both earned weekly awards from the Horizon League as announced by the league office Tuesday afternoon.

Akers was named the Nike HL Men's Diver of the Week while Krusinski was tabbed as the Nike HL Men's Swimmer of the Week.

It is the first honor of the season for Akers and the fourth such accolade of his career. Krusinski earns the first weekly league award of his career with this announcement.

Both Vikings put forth impressive performances this past weekend as CSU opened its dual meet schedule with a pair of matchups at Milwaukee and Green Bay.

Akers won three events across the two Horizon League duals. He won the 1-meter event Friday at Milwaukee in his first competition of the season with 298.95 points before he raised his performance to another level Saturday. Akers won the 1-meter event at Green Bay with a career-high 330.60 points, over 30 points clear of the NCAA zones standard. Akers also won the 3-meter event against the Phoenix with 318.07 points, just shy of tallying his second NCAA mark of the day.

Krusinski racked up first-place finishes over the two meets. He went a perfect 4-for-4 in the win over the Panthers Friday night. He won the 100 breaststroke, the 200 breaststroke and the 200 IM and also swam on the winning 200 medley relay team. He won the 200 breast by over three seconds and won the 200 IM by over a second while posting the fastest second-leg split in the relay. Krusinski then posted two more first-place individual finishes fewer than 24 hours later at Green Bay and dropped time in all three individual events from the day before. He won the 200 breaststroke against the Phoenix in 2:03.41, the fastest time in the league this season.

Krusinski also holds the fastest time in the league this season in the 200 IM as he posted a mark of 1:53.65 in the Akron Zips Classic.

This marks the first time since December 2017 that the CSU men swept the league's weekly honors.

The Vikings have now taken home three weekly awards from the league after their first two weeks of competition.

Cleveland State will resume action Nov. 22-24 as it hosts the eighth annual Magnus Cup.
