CSU Men Top Milwaukee in Dual Opener

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams contested their first duals of the 2019-20 season Friday evening against fellow Horizon League foe Milwaukee.

The CSU men came away with a 171-129 victory while the Viking women dropped a 165.5-132.5 decision. The win by the Viking men marks the first collegiate dual win for first-year head coach Hannah Burandt.

"We have a tradition of 'shout-outs' at the end of the week and after a meet, and today every single person had something to 'shout-out' about," Burandt said. "Coming off a long bus ride and racing in an eight-lane pool with no space to warm down, we raced and dove with hearts and guts. There is a lot to be proud about and a lot to be hopeful for tomorrow."

Sophomore Jack Krusinski went a perfect 4-for-4 Friday as he won all three individual events entered and also swam on a winning relay.

Krusinski began his day by swimming the second leg of the opening event—the 200 medley relay. Junior Dominik Niedzialek led off while seniors Dominic Poletta and Jack MacDonald swam the back half as the quartet won in 1:33.97.

Krusinski then proceeded to win both breaststroke events, edging out senior Tyler Stevenson in both races. The sophomore won the 100 in 57.33 seconds while the senior was second in 58.17. In the 200 breast, Krusinski took first in 2:07.02 while Stevenson was second in 2:10.16.

Niedzialek swept the distance freestyle events Friday. He won the 1000 free in 9:37.30, finishing more than 21 seconds ahead of the field. Niedzialek then touched the wall first in the 500 free in 4:39.78, more than 11 seconds ahead of the field.

On the women's side, junior Lexie Kostelnik led the way by sweeping the distance freestyle events.
