CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving team will host the sixth annual Magnus Cup from Friday through Sunday at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium. Fifteen teams will compete on the women's side and 10 will compete on the men's side.

 

Of the teams competing in the Magnus Cup, there will be representatives from all three NCAA divisions.

 

This year's Magnus Cup will hold a little extra value for the Vikings as CSU will host the Horizon League Championship in February, a meet that features a similar format to the Magnus Cup.

 

CSU head coach Paul Graham said the team can best use the Magnus Cup to gather information about how the structure of a three-day meet works and feels. He said swimming multiple events and working across several days will be two things the Vikings will hope to gain knowledge about this weekend.

 

Graham also noted that the preparation for Magnus Cup is different than that of a typical meet.

 

"It's the time," Graham said. "It's how you prepare your body, making sure you get enough rest in between sessions, making sure that you're getting enough recovery, food and water."

 

Senior swimmer Jamie VanDewerker also said the preparation for a three-day meet is different than that of a standard meet. She said the team is prepared to bring a little extra for the Magnus Cup.

 

"Any other meet, we will train super hard the week before right up to that meet, but for the Magnus Cup, we definitely take a couple of days to rest and really prepare ourselves," VanDewerker said.

 

The men's team is coming off a win over Green Bay at the beginning of November and the women's team is coming off wins over Green Bay and Marshall. VanDewerker said that excitement and momentum has carried over to Magnus Cup.

 

"I think there's going to be some fast swimming," VanDewerker said. "We are just really excited to puts our suits on and really get in the pool and race these other teams."

 

The Magnus Cup will begin Friday at 9:00 a.m. and continue through Sunday with preliminary and final events on all three days.

 

Prelims will start at 9:00 am all three days with finals at 5:00 pm on Friday and Saturday and at 3:00 pm on Sunday.

 

An all-weekend ticket for the Magnus Cup will be $15 for adults and $10 for seniors and children. An all-day ticket will be $7 for adults and $5 for seniors or children. Heat sheets will be available for $2 per session.

CSU students will be admitted free with a valid Viking Card.
