CINCINNATI, Ohio – The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming & diving teams closed their season-opening road swing by falling to Cincinnati at the Keating Aquatic Center Friday afternoon.

The CSU men fell, 189-96, while the women came up short, 201-91.

Sophomore DJ Arslanian and junior Jason van der Touw both won an individual event and swam on a winning relay for the Vikings.

Arslanian won the 100 freestyle in 46.50 seconds while van der Touw claimed the 100 backstroke in 50.84 seconds in his first time swimming the event as a Viking. Van der Touw was also CSU's top finisher in the 500 freestyle, placing fourth in 4:39.74.

Sophomore Jack MacDonald led off the winning 200 free relay for CSU and was followed by Arslanian, sophomore Tyler Stevenson and van der Touw. The quartet stopped the clock in 1:24.84.

Freshman Dominik Niedzialek also won an individual event, topping the field in the 200 backstroke in 1:53.61. Freshman Timothy Kubacki was third in the same event (1:57.34).

Senior Grant Wethington posted a runner-up finish in the 100 butterfly (52.00) while sophomore Sam Sawyer was fourth (53.00).

Senior Patrick Tippen and MacDonald went 3-4 in the 50 freestyle in 21.63 and 21.84 seconds, respectively.

Freshman Lee Moffett and Stevenson posted solid swims and were the top CSU finisher in the 1000 freestyle (9:58.73) and the 200 freestyle (1:45.14), respectively.

On the women's side, junior Molly McNamara led the way by winning the 100 butterfly in 56.49 seconds. She also swam the third leg on both of CSU's second-place relay squads.

In the 200 medley relay, junior Cassandra Oltman led off and was followed by senior Tobie Zeller before senior Jamie VanDewerker anchored the quartet. The group finished in 1:47.79.

In the 200 freestyle relay, sophomore Gabriella Marinelli started the relay and was followed by classmate Meghan Bobick with VanDewerker again anchoring the squad. That quartet combined to touch the wall in 1:39.02.

Marinelli added a third-place finish in the 200 freestyle (1:55.81) and a fourth-place effort in the 500 freestyle (5:15.09). Freshman Irena Weclawiak took fifth in the 200 free behind Marinelli in 1:56.74.

VanDewerker took third in the 100 backstroke in 59.93 seconds while sophomore Chuchu Yang was third in the 200 backstroke in 2:11.41.

Freshman Alana Cartwright took third behind McNamara in the 100 fly (59.14) and was CSU's top finisher in the 100 breaststroke, taking fourth in 1:07.35.

Freshman Lexie Kostelnik was CSU's top finisher in the 1000 freestyle, taking fourth in 10:36.31. Bobick was CSU's highest performer in both the 50 freestyle (25.06) and 100 freestyle (53.79), taking fifth in both events.

Junior Curtis Roden took second in 3-meter diving (262.45) while freshman Erica Henrichsen was the runner-up in the 1-meter event (204.55).

After three meets away from home to begin the season, Cleveland State will open its home slate in two weeks when it welcomes Green Bay and Marshall to Busbey Natatorium for two days of competition.
