CLEVELAND, Ohio - The Cleveland State University men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped their final Horizon League dual of the season to defending champion Oakland Friday evening at The Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.

The CSU men fell, 170.5-129.5, while the women lost, 185-107.

Despite the setback, sophomore Curtis Roden and senior Philipp Sikatzki surpassed NCAA qualifying standards against the Golden Grizzlies.

Roden scored a career-high 320.93 points in 3-meter diving to qualify for the NCAA Zone Championships. Each of his final five dives in that event scored at least 50 points. His highest-scoring dive of the competition was a reverse 2.5 somersault tuck that netted him 56.70 points. Roden finished second in the 3-meter event and third in 1-meter diving with 253.58 points.

Sikatzki won both of his individual events in NCAA 'B' qualifying times. He claimed the 100 backstroke in 47.56 seconds and topped the field in the 100 butterfly in 47.63 seconds. Sikatzki also swam the lead leg on CSU's winning 200 medley relay team that finished in 1:30.62.

Sophomore Tommi Wolst, freshman DJ Arslanian and senior Robert Tolson followed Sikatzki on the winning 200 medley relay team, as Tolson held off a late Oakland charge to win in a thrilling finish.

For the second consecutive dual, Wolst won three individual events for the Vikings. He began his day, as an individual, by winning the 100 breaststroke in 56.38 seconds. He proceeded to win the 200 backstroke in 1:49.28 before finishing with a victory in the 100 IM in 50.15 seconds.

Tolson won the 100 freestyle in 46.53 seconds and was the runner-up in the 200 free in 1:42.49.

Arslanian's top individual finish was a second-place showing in the 100 butterfly, trailing only Sikatzki in 50.81 seconds. He also finished third in the 200 freestyle in 1:43.61.

Freshman Tyler Stevenson was the runner-up in the 200 breaststroke in 2:09.42. Seniors Phillip Brittain and Patrick Walsh and sophomore MacJilton Lewis posted third-place finishes in the 100 breaststroke, the 1000 freestyle and the 500 freestyle, respectively.

On the women's side, senior Tori Taffner led the Vikings by sweeping the diving events.

Taffner scored 255.45 points to win the 1-meter event and notched 253.05 points to finish first in the 3-meter event. Taffner's highest scoring dive in the 1-meter event was an inward 1.5 somersault pike that netted 50.40 points. She earned the same score in the 3-meter event with her forward 2.5 somersault pike.

Freshman Gabriella Marinelli was one of the top CSU swimmers on the women's side. She won the 200 freestyle in 1:54.46 and was the runner-up in the 100 free in 52.62 seconds. Marinelli also swam the anchor leg on CSU's 200 freestyle relay team that finished second in 1:36.85.

Junior Jamie VanDewerker led off the 200 free relay and was followed by freshmen Meghan Bobick and Ismary Puente.

VanDewerker won the 50 freestyle in 24.35 seconds. Puente took third in the same event (24.76) while Bobick finished fourth (24.82).

Sophomore Molly McNamara won the 100 butterfly for the fourth consecutive dual, as she topped the field in 56.45 seconds. She also finished third in the 100 IM in 1:00.33.

Sophomore Cassandra Oltman and freshman Chuchu Yang both posted runner-up finishes in backstroke events. Oltman finished the 100 in 58.78 seconds while Yang stopped the clock in the 200 in 2:07.24.

Junior Tobie Zeller finished third in the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.88 while sophomore Michaela Bargardi was third in the 200 backstroke in 2:08.17.

Cleveland State will contest its final dual of the season next Saturday, Feb. 4, when it hosts Buffalo and celebrates Senior Day.
