SETTING THE SCENE:  The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in action this weekend as the Vikings will compete at the Kenyon College Swimming and Diving Invitational on Saturday (Feb. 22) to finish out the regular season.  Swimming and Diving will begin at 1:30 p.m.

REVIEWING LAST TIME OUT:  The men's and women's swimming and diving teams defeated conference opponent Valparaiso on Friday (Feb. 7).  The women won 123-69, with the men topping the Crusaders 109-89.

The women had first place showings from freshman Rowan Elbadry, senior Alex Johansson, sophomore Jodi Turk, senior Christine Kopacko, junior Hayley Smith, senior Nikki Kolis, sophomore Beth Robertson, and freshman Dayna Kiekebosch.

On the men's side, CSU had first place finishes by sophomore Adam Ingledew, junior Nathan Grant, junior Kyle Riordan, freshman Patrick Walsh, senior Ryan Blankenship, and freshman Robert Tolson.

CONVINCING WIN OVER VALPO:

  • Between the men and the women, the Vikings combined for 18 first place finishes out of 22 events.

SIX MEN SWIMMERS EARN TOP FINISHES VS. VALPO:

  • Adam Ingledew won the 50 free (21.70) and the 100 fly (52.20) against Valpo.  Nathan Grant won the 500 free with a time of 5:46.43 against the Crusaders.
  • Kyle Riordan earned a first place finish in the 200 free with a time of 1:46.52.  Patrick Walsh added to the first place wins over the Crusaders in the 1,000 free (9:49.45).
  • Ryan Blankenship swam in the 200 IM with a wall touch of 2:00.88 and Robert Tolson swam a quick 48.66 in the 100 free against Valparaiso.

U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • Eight talented CSU swimmers (Adam Ingledew, Alex Lewis, Alex Johansson, Al Shillito, Madisen Tretter, Justin Kermack, Nathan Grant, and Gage Alleman) had the opportunity to swim against top talent in Knoxville, Tennessee from Dec. 5 - Dec. 7.

LEWIS MAKES HISTORY AT U.S. WINTER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIPS:

  • At U.S. Nationals, Lewis set back-to-back school records in the 4x50 Free Relay and in the 100 butterfly.  His time in the 50 free was an incredible 19.99 as the lead off swimmerand in the 100 fly he had an impressive wall touch of 48.11.

UP NEXT:

  • The Vikings will prepare for, and host the 2014 Horizon League Swimming and Diving Championships on Wednesday-Saturday (Feb. 26- Mar. 1) at the Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.  On Wednesday, diving will be the first event at 1:30 p.m., followed by swimming events at 5:30 p.m.  For tickets and information, please call 216-687-4848.
