SETTING THE SCENE:  The Cleveland State men's and women's swimming and diving teams will be in action this week on Tuesday Dec. 3, as the team will swim against Canisius, John Carroll, Case Western, and Notre Dame College (Ohio) in the City Dual Meet Invitational at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium.  Diving will begin at 3:00 p.m., with swimming events beginning at 5:00 p.m.

REVIEWING LAST TIME OUT:  The men and women had solid performances in the Second Annual Magnus Cup.  The men held first place for two of the three days, and ended up finishing second out of four schools on the final day.  The women finished in second place out of seven schools in all three days of competition.

On the men's side, theVikings had meet records set by Alex Lewis, Nathan Grant, and Adam Ingledew.  Lewis finished runner up in the 100 butterfly with a previous meet record time of 48.23.  Lewis' time  was an NCAA Division I B cut time.  In the 50 yard butterfly Lewis set a school record time of 21.86. In the 200 freestyle Ingledew finished first, posting a meet record time of 1:39.18.  In the 100 breast the Vikings finished first and second.  Grant finished first with a second meet record of the Magnus Cup (55.70).  On the diving end, Sophomore Danny Roberts finished first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving competitions.  Roberts had a top score in the 1-meter dive (286.35).  His score in the 3-meter was a top score of 344.70.

The women had strong showings from Madisen Tretter who had a meet record time of 1:03.39 in the 100 breast and had three second place finishes in the 50 yard breast, 400 Medley Relay, and the 200 Medley Relay.  Alex Johansson had a strong showing in the pool as well.  Johansson was part of a first place finish in the 200  Free Relay, finished first in the 100 butterfly with a top time of 56.43, and in the 50 yard butterfly with a top time of 25.06.

FINISHING AT THE TOP:

  • The men and women had 14 combined first place finishes through three days of swimming in the Second Annual Magnus Cup.

CITY DUAL MEET INVITATIONAL:

  • Last year both the men and women had four strong wins against Canisius, Notre Dame College, Case Western, and John Carroll.
  • Mark De Swardt, Al Shillito, and Berry Thompson led the way for CSU.
  • Jodi Turk, Alice Sommerville, and Christine Kopacko led the way for the Vikings.

LEWIS AND ROBERTS EARN HL SWIMMER/DIVER OF THE WEEK:

  • Sophomore diver Danny Roberts and Senior swimmer Alex Lewis earned Horizon League swimmer and diver of the week honors on Tuesday (Nov. 26).
  • Lewis led Cleveland State placing first in three individual events including the 50 yard freestyle time of 20.27, 50 fly with a time of 21.86 and the 100 yard freestyle with a time of 44.47.  He set a meet record in the 50 fly, and posted a b-cut time and another meet record time in the 50 yard free.
  • Roberts finished first in both the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events at the Magnus Cup.  He set a meet record and a school season top score in the 3-meter (344.70).  In the 1-meter diving event, Roberts posted a score of 286.35.  It was the second straight week he claimed HL Diver of the Week.

LEWIS MAKES HISTORY:

  • Alex Lewis had six lifetime best times, setting the school record in the 50 fly and won six events.

UP NEXT:

  • The Vikings will travel to Knoxville, Tennesee, as eight swimmers (Al Shillito, Nathan Grant, Alex Lewis, Adam Ingledew, Gage Alleman, Justin Kermack, Alex Johansson, Madisen Tretter) will compete on Thursday-Sunday (Dec. 5-8) in the U.S. Winter National Championships.
