Vikings Finish Runner-Up on Final Day

CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team finished second on the final day of the Second Annual Magnus Cup.  The Vikings ended up with 1,859 points through the three days of swimming.

On the third day of the finals, Alex Lewis continued his consistent swimming performances earning his second meet record of the weekend with a top time of 21.86 in the 50 yard butterfly.  Lewis takes home his second first place victory of the day with a time of 44.47 in the 100 freestyle.  In the 200 breast Nathan Grant finished atop the leader board with a wall touch of 2:02.01.  In the 200 yard butterfly Justin Kermack finished third with a time of 1:51.50.  The Vikings finished second in the 400 Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:03.13.  Lewis, Grant, Ferro, and Tolson led the relay team.   

Head Coach Wally Morton had his final thoughts on the men's first place victory. "We had a good day learning about our team.  Both teams (men and women) had strong runner-up finishes.  The men were just inched out.  It came down to the last two events, very similar to how we won the conference last year.  We still swam extremely well," said Morton.

 "I want to recognize Alex Lewis who had six lifetime best times, set the school record in the 50 fly and won six events over the weekend.  He was by far our most outstanding swimmer in the meet.  Nathan Grant also had an outstanding meet.  He was just off the school record in the 200 breast.  He had a runner-up finish in the 500 free in all of our events and held up very well throughout the meet."

 "Kevin Rapien has done a wonderful job in practice with Alex Lewis, Robert Tolson, and Alex Johansson.  They had really good meets.  The team from top to bottom had great times.  We do a ritual where we do claps for best times.  Most of the swimmers had multiple best times. We have a long way to go, but are making progress, and happy Thanksgiving to everybody."

 CSU will be back in the pool on Tuesday (Dec. 3) as the Vikings will host Canisus, John Carroll, Case Western, and Notre Dame College (Ohio).  Swimming and diving will begin at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m.
