CLEVELAND, Ohio- The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team holds first entering tomorrow's final day of the Second Annual Magnus Cup. The Vikings upped their score of 1,300 points.
CSU on the day between the men and women, three meet records. The records were held by Alex Lewis, Adam Ingledew, and Madisen Tretter.
On day two of the swimming finals, the Vikings began the evening swimming in the 200 Medley Relay who took third. CSU was led by Al Shillito, Nathan Grant, Alex Lewis, and Adam Ingledew. The four timed out at 1:31.98. Ingledew had a solid split time of 20.67. Lewis finished runner up in the 100 butterfly with a previous meet record time of 48.23. Lewis' time is an NCAA Division I B top time. The first place finisher had a meet record time of 48.00. In the 200 freestyle Ingledew finished first who conquered a meet record time of 1:39.18.
In the 100 breast the Vikings finished first and second. Grant finished first with a second meet record of the day on the men's side (55.70). Grant had a fast first split of 26.14. Brian Ferro came in second with a time of 56.58. Lewis continued his hot swimming as he finished third in the 100 backstroke with a time of 49.88. To finish out day two the Vikings finished fourth with a time of 6:55.30.
On day two of the finals, the men's diving team competed in the 1-meter dive. The Vikings were led by Danny Roberts and Stephen Schillero. Roberts took first for the second day in a row with a top score of 286.35. Roberts improved his score from the prelims to the finals dramatically with an 80.65 score difference. Schillero finished third with a score of 266.70. His scores stayed consistent through the two days of diving competition.
Head Diving Coach Rich Karban was very pleased through the two days on how their divers have performed. "As a whole I thought the divers were pretty consistent. The scores were pretty similar from contest to contest. I think they came back strong and did a nice job in the finals. As a whole it gives me a pretty good check in to see where they are at in their development. It gives us a good way to know where we have to be moving forward, "said Karban.
"Danny Roberts did a very nice job. He improved his score dramatically going from the prelims to the finals (80.65). Stephen Schillero did a great job. He only missed one dive out of 12. Sean Tyrrell is improving and getting better, being more consistent," said a very pleased Karban.
Head Coach Wally Morton had his thoughts on how CSU performed in the pool on day two of the Magnus Cup. "I was really pleased with the continuing development of our team. We had some great wins tonight. Alex Lewis was spectacular in the 100 fly and 100 back. Alex (Lewis) had his best time in the 100 fly and by far his best time in the 100 back," said a pleased Morton.
"Nathan Grant had an impressive swimming second day and Adam Ingledew won the 200 free and was a very solid swim. We are swimming our team in multiple events and as we go along, this is not just a competition, but it's a training exercise on how they can best take care of themselves and perform at a very high level. I am very happy that our new 20 swimmers are swimming at a high level at this point."
The Vikings will finish out the final day of the Magnus Cup tomorrow with prelims beginning at 9:00 a.m. and the finals will begin at 3:00 p.m. The 1,650 freestyle final will begin at 1:00 p.m.
