Vikings Win Back-to-Back Meets

NIAGARA, N.Y.-  The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team defeated Niagara University, 166-76, on Saturday afternoon.

The Vikings (3-4) beating St. Bonaventure yesterday, had another impressive performance against Niagara.  Cleveland State had nine first place winners on the day, including a pair of wins by Alex Lewis in the 50 freestyle (21.57) and in the 100 butterfly (52.12).  CSU diver Danny Roberts had the top score in the 3-meter (303.45) and in the 1-meter (296.85).

The next five first place victory events were led by Patrick Walsh, Adam Ingledew, Jon Querciagrossa, Declan MClaughlin, and the Vikings earned the win in the 200 free relay.  Walsh won the 1,000 freestyle with a wall touch (9:50.48), Ingledew was atop the leaderboard in the 200 free (1:46.26), Querciagrossa was victorious in the 500 free (4:48.41), McLaughlin swam a quick time in the 100 breast (1:00.85), and the Vikings outlasted Niagara in the 200 Freestyle Relay (Grant, Lewis, Nordike, Shillito) with a time (1:26.44).

Head Coach Wally Morton was impressed by his team winning two straight meets.  "One of our objectives was team support, unity, and spirit.  There was great enthusiasm at the meet and led to great swimming. We picked up four wins this weekend (men and women), and are making solid progress as the season evolves," said Morton.  

Besides the nine first place finishes, the Green and White had 11 second place finishes against NU.  The Vikings had a strong showing in the 200 Medley Relay (Shillito, Grant, Kermack, Ingledew) with a time of 1:36.62.  Kyle Riordan has had many strong swimming performances so far this year.  He had a runner-up finish in the 1,000 freestyle (9:58.94).  To go along with a first place time in the 500 free, Querciagrossa had a solid time in the 200 freestyle (1:46.92).  

Nathan Grant had a strong showing in the 200 IM, with a time of 1:56.27.  With Ingledew finishing first in the 200 free, he had an impact in the 100 free, who touched the wall at 48.24.  Shillito added a second place finish in the 100 backstroke (51.80).  Walsh kept his strong showing times up in the pool, as he had a solid time in the 500 freestyle (4:48.83).  Brian Ferro got into the mix helping out the Vikings, as he had an impressive time in the 100 breast (1:01.02) and in the 200 Free Relay Robert Tolson, Ian Ward, Mauricio Gonzalez, and Heckman contributed to the win with a time of 1:29.15.

On the diving end  Stephen Schillero and Sean Tyrell dove well for CSU.  Tyrell in the 1-meter dive had a score of 235.57, and Schillero in the 3-meter dive had a score of 268.35.

The Vikings will be back in the pool at Robert F. Busbey Natatorium on Fiday-Sunday (Nov. 22-24) as CSU will swim in the CSU Magnus Invitational.  Swimming will be an all day affair at Cleveland State.
