Vikings Win Horizon League Opener

CLEVELAND, Ohio-  The Cleveland State men's swimming and diving team defeated Green Bay 149-92 in the home opener.

A pair of swimmers finished first in two individual events for CSU.  Freshman, Patrick Walsh won the 1,000 free (9:45.28) and the 500 free (4:45.29).  Senior Alex Lewis finished atop in the 50 yard free (20.61) and in the 100 yard free Lewis touched the wall at 46.50.

Head Coach Wally Morton was very impressed on the way Patrick Walsh swam in the pool.  "He had a very impressive meet and had a very solid 1:58.08 in the 200 fly."  

The men dominated Green Bay, winning nine of the 13 swimming events on the  afternoon.  The Vikings won the the 3-meter diving.  Stephen Schillero had a top score of 303.00 In the 400 medley relay the Vikings Al Shillito, Nathan Grant, Justin Kermack, and Alex Lewis had a time 3:25.31. In 1-meter diving Danny Roberts had a top diving score of 283.94.  In the 200 yard butterfly Justin Kermack led the way for CSU, touching the wall at 1:54.45.  In the 200 yard breastroke Nathan Grant finished atop with a time of 2:06.85.

Head Coach Wally Morton was very pleased on the way the first home opener went.  "We had a lot of young guys step up and were very balanced in the events," said Morton.

Other swimmers that contributed on the win was freshman Gage Alleman who placed second in the 1,000 yard free.  Freshman Joshua Nordike placed second in the 50 free, Nathan Grant took second in the 100 yard free, and another freshman that came up big was Kyle Riordan who finished runner-up in the 500 yard free.

The men will be back in the pool when CSU will travel to Columbus, Ohio where they will swim against Ohio State, Denison, and Virginia Tech on Friday (Nov.1).  The meet will begin at 5:00 p.m.  The men will then return back home on Saturday, (Nov. 2) as CSU will swim against Miami (OH) with events starting at 2:00 p.m.
