Viking Men Head to South Bend for Dennis Stark Relays on Friday to Open Season

PREVIEWING THE MEN:

The men's Cleveland State swimming and diving team is coming off of a strong and record-breaking 2012-13 season, and ready to improve on those results this upcoming season.  The men are the defending conference champions from a year ago.

On the men's side, the squad will be looking to improve on a 12-3-1 record that saw them win seven of their last 10 dual meets.

The men will be anchored by an outstanding core group of seniors led by Al Shillito, Alex Lewis, Brian Ferro, and Justin Kermack.  Shillito dominated last season in the 100 and 200 back, who was the Horizon League Swimmer of the year.

Alex Lewis was one of the top swimmers in the conference, who ended up finishing atop the leaderboard in the 100 fly/100 free and the 50 free.  Head Coach Wally Morton mentioned Lewis will continue to progress and be the foundation for this season.

Brian Ferro who swims the 100 and 200 breast and the 200 IM will continue to duplicate what he did last year for the swimming program.  At the Horizon League Championships, Ferro finished second in the 200 breast.

Justin Kermack is the school record holder in the 200 butterfly and won the 200 fly event at the Horizon League Championships.  Other key returners are sophomore Adam Ingledew and junior Nathan Grant.  Ingledew is currently the 200 freestyle record holder and Grant is one of the top in the conference in the events of the 100 and 200 breast, and in the 200 IM.  He was the conference champion in the 200 breast last season.

INCOMING FRESHMAN:

Incoming freshmen who will help contribute in 2013-14 are Gage Alleman who will swim in the 200 and 400 IM events, as well as the 200 breast, and the 200 backstroke.  Phillip Brittain will compete in the sprint freestyle, breastroke, and IM events.  Patrick Walsh will be competing in the distance events.  Robert Tolson will swim in the sprint freestyle events.  Tolson was a high school swimmer stand out at Hoover in North Canton, Ohio where he placed second in the sprint events and took third in the 100 freestyle at states.

UP NEXT:

The men will be back in the pool at home on Saturday (Oct.26.) at The Robert F. Busbey Natatorium, as the men will compete in their first swim meet and conference meet of the season against Green Bay.
